Congress has repealed a law that would have made it mandatory for a person's social security number to be published on their driver's liscense. By having your social security number made public like that, thieves and scoundrels would have had an easy way to gain your name and life history. This information would help them tap into your banking accounts, credit cards, and other personal information which can effect your credit score.

This law was aimed at lowering illegal migration rates; identity theft was most likely not even an idea when this law was being written.
Luckily, the opposition to this law was strong enough for it to be rejected by Congress. If this would have been passed, it could have be a disasterous turn of events in the protecting of identities.
